Ranking and KPI Overview
This article gives an overview of the project ranking and project KPI features of ResourceFirst.
Overview
The objective of project ranking is to produce a subjective score for each project, based on user scoring of rank fields, where the the average score indicates the relative importance of each project.
The objective of the Key Project Indicators (KPIs) feature is to calculate an objective score for each KPI where the score indicates the current likelihood of meeting the baseline objective for the KPI and the average of all KPI scores is an indicator of the overall health of the project.
A project must have an Official baseline in order to have any KPI values.
Project Ranking
Rank fields are criteria by which the value of projects can be measured.
Rank field values are the measurements that define the degree to which the project meets, of fails to meet, the field criterion.
Rank field values can be input as a number or as a list choice selection which has a defined numeric value.
The overall rank score of a project is calculated by a formula which takes into account all the ranking criteria (fields) used for projects of a particular type. (Infrastructure projects may have some very different criteria from New Product Development projects.)
A ResourceFirst administrator configures a set of ranking fields. Each field is defined as either a list or a numeric value entry type. Both entry types are configured to produce up to four colors (five if you include “no color” for no value present).
A user with edit rights to the project goes to the Project>Data-Detail>Ranking page and chooses a list item or enters a numeric value for each rank field.
In this screenshot, the user is selecting the “Will better align . . .” choice from the four list items available for the Product Advantage rank field.

In this screenshot, the user is entering the value -8 in the General rank field.

See the article Project Ranking for more detail.
Project KPIs
KPI scores are calculated by custom Pulse scripts or stored procedures using current forecast data and the most recent official baseline data.
Projects without an Official baseline have empty KPI values.
Eight standard KPIs come defined in the system:
- Overall
- Budget
- Schedule
- Scope
- Risk
- Issue
- Resource
- Quality
Budget, Schedule, Scope, and Resource KPIs – objective, calculated measures of project forecast versus baseline plans.
Risk and Issue KPIs – calculated based on the average of Probability * Impact for every risk and issue on the project; the probability and impact values are subjective assessments from the project manager/team.
KPI Quality – copied from the Project Status field which is the project manager’s subjective assessment of the project’s health.
The calculations for the standard KPIs can be modified upon request. New KPIs can be developed in a customization project.

See the article Project KPIs for more detail.
Ranking and KPI Views
There is a Ranking page and a KPI page in the Analysis Area. They both have a similar layout.
The Project Data view selection control is at the upper right of both pages.
The Project Data fields defined in the selected view are displayed at the left of the page.
The Rank Criteria fields or KPI fields are displayed to the right of all Project Data fields.
