Showing Header Rows

This article describes how show two types of header info when working with assignments or in other contexts.

Overview

When working with assignments (or doing certain other activities), it is sometimes useful to display additional information at the top of the page about a selected assignment and its related project or resource. There are two options: Show Column Headers and Show Project Schedule.

Show Column Headers

In the Assignments page (or in selected other contexts), click Options->Header Rows->Show Column Headers:

At the top of the page, a set of initially blank header rows will appear.

Important: In order to see the desired header row information, you must explicitly select a non-hyperlinked field in the assignment row for which you wish more information (you must do this even if a row has already been selected). Once you have selected the assignment, the desired header information will appear:

In the Column Header case, project phases appear as the top header row. The next two rows show the capacity and demand for the resource or skill noted in the assignment. Finally, the allocation and allocation % for the specific assignment demand are shown.

On the header rows, the fields shown are defined as follows (related to the Assignment row selected, but not always in context of just that row):

  • Total Capacity (based on Global Filters): Capacity of all resources with the row’s skill; represents the total for all rows shown for that skill
  • Total Demand (based on the role/skill within the Node on the selected row): Total demand for the skill within the node on the selected row.
  • Allocation: (based on the allocated named resource for the selected row): Total amount allocated for the row in question. Note: For Skill assignments, if “Use Availability for Skill Assignments” is turned off, allocation will always be zero. If “Use Availability for Skill Assignments” is active, then the allocation will reflect the portion of the skill that “can be” allocated to available resources in that node.
  • Allocation % (based on the allocated named resource for the selected row): The demand for the assignment divided by the amount able to be allocated.  Note: For Skill assignments, if “Use Availability for Skill Assignments” is turned off, allocation % will always be zero. If “Use Availability for Skill Assignments” is active, then the allocation % will reflect the portion of the skill that “can be” allocated to available resources in that node.

Show Project Schedule

In the Assignments page (or in selected other contexts), click Options->Header Rows->Show Project Schedule:

At the top of the page, a set of initially blank header rows will appear.

Important: In order to see the desired header row information, you must now explicitly select a non-hyperlinked field in the assignment row for which you wish more information (you must do this even if a row has already been selected). Once you have selected the assignment, the desired header information will appear:

In the Project Schedule case, the start and end date for the project appear as a line, along with a visual representation of the project phases, and any project milestones.  Especially when initially entering forecasts, it may be useful to see the related phases and milestones.
